Environment
Reflection for UNIX and OpenVMS version 14.x
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0
Mozilla Firefox
Situation
This technical note explains how to configure your Windows system to launch Reflection when accessing a Telnet URL, such as telnet://locis.loc.gov/.
Note: Starting with Internet Explorer 7.0 and under Windows Vista, the support for opening telnet URLs within the browser has been disabled (results in error “The webpage cannot be displayed”). To re-enable this support, you must modify the registry. For more information, contact Technical Support (https://support.microfocus.com/contact/).
Resolution
Configuring Telnet URL with Reflection Already Installed
If you are running Internet Explorer 6.0 or Mozilla Firefox on Windows XP, 2000, or 2003, use the following steps to configure your system for Telnet URLs to open Reflection.
- Open My Computer from your Desktop or Start menu (depending on your operating system) or press [Windows key]+E.
- Click Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab.
- In the Registered file types, scroll and find "URL:Telnet Protocol." On Windows XP and 2003, it is listed near the top with extension "(NONE)." On Windows 2000, it is listed with the extension "N/A."
- Select the file type "URL:Telnet Protocol" and then click Advanced.
- In the Edit File Type dialog box, under Actions, verify that "open" is selected. Click Edit.
- In the "Application used to perform action" edit field, enter:
<drive letter>:<path to Reflection install folder>\<exe> /w %1
where <exe> is your Reflection product executable as follows:
R1Win.exe |
Reflection for HP with NS/VT |
R2Win.exe |
Reflection for UNIX and Open/VMS |
R4Win.exe |
Reflection for ReGIS Graphics |
For example, if Reflection for UNIX and OpenVMS is installed in the default folder, enter:
C:\Program Files\Attachmate\Reflection\r2win.exe /w %1
Tip: You can browse to find the executable and add /w %1 to the end of the application field.
For more information on other startup switch options (such as loading a settings file), see KB 7021723.
- Click OK three times to close dialogs.
Reflection will now be launched when you open a telnet://<host> URL in your web browser or in the Start > Run dialog.
Configuring Telnet URL with Reflection Deployment
When deploying Reflection, you can set Reflection to be the default Telnet URL application. Configure this option in Reflection Customization Manager: Customize > Set Installation Options > Application Properties.
For more information on customizing your Reflection installation, see the Reflection Deployment Guide.
