Environment

EXTRA! X-treme version 9.x

Situation

JAWS (a third-party screen reader utility) may announce the cursor position (row, column) with each keystroke in a terminal session.

Resolution

To resolve this problem, remove the Attachmate EXTRA! scripts shipped with JAWS. Follow the steps below to remove the EXTRA.* scripts from the JAWS directory.
  1. For JAWS 7.0 or higher, search in the Windows\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\Jaws\7.x\Settings\enu directory.

For JAWS versions earlier than 7.0, search in the JAWS50\SETTINGS\ENU directory.

  1. Remove the files listed below (either move them to a temporary directory or delete them).
  2. Restart JAWS.

You should see a significant difference in how JAWS reads the screen.

Below is the list of EXTRA.* files to remove to fix the problem:

EXTRA.JCF
EXTRA.JFF
EXTRA.JKM
EXTRA.JSB
EXTRA.JSD
EXTRA.JSM
EXTRA.JSS

Cause

This problem occurs because Freedom Scientific ships scripts that automatically load when it detects that EXTRA! X-treme is loaded into memory. The scripts cause JAWS to incorrectly read the terminal session.
