Beginning with Windows XP, Microsoft Windows no longer include a Java Virtual Machine (JVM). If you plan to running Reflection for the Web on a Windows XP, Windows Server, or Windows Vista machine, you may need to manually install a JVM before Reflection for the Web will run.

Installing a Virtual Machine is a quick, simple procedure. This technical note explains how to obtain a virtual machine to install on Windows computers for use with Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Who is affected by this issue?

This issue affects any Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 or Windows Vista computer that does not have a Java Virtual Machine installed. However, note the following:

  • Computer manufacturers may pre-install a virtual machine on their Windows computers.
  • Computers upgraded from a previous Windows operating system may retain Java Virtual Machines that were present in the computer's original configuration.

How to Determine if a JVM is Installed

For information about determining if a JVM is installed, see Technical Note 1674.

Installing a Virtual Machine

To download and install a current version of the Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which includes a virtual machine, visit the Sun Microsystems web page,

For more information about virtual machines and Reflection for the Web, see technical note 1674.

Deployment Recommendations

If your organization uses disk images to deploy workstation operating systems (using Norton Ghost or a similar utility), you may want to install the Sun JRE on your master Windows workstations.

If your organization installs workstation operating systems by another method, you may want to install the Sun JRE on each Windows workstation before Reflection for the Web users use the workstations.
